What is EPS (earnings per share)?

Earnings per share is a company's profit attributable to ordinary shareholders divided by the average number of shares in issue.

EPS turns total profit into a per-share figure, so it can be compared with the share price and across years even when the number of shares changes.

Basic EPS uses the shares actually in issue; diluted EPS also counts shares that could be created from convertible instruments or options, and is never higher than basic EPS.

Formula

EPS = profit attributable to ordinary shareholders ÷ weighted average shares
