What is Debt to equity?

Debt to equity compares a company's total borrowings with its shareholders' equity.

A ratio of 50% means Rs 50 of debt for every Rs 100 of equity. Higher leverage magnifies returns in good years and losses in bad ones, and makes a company sensitive to interest rates.

Formula

Debt to equity = total debt ÷ shareholders' equity × 100
