What is Net debt and net cash?

Net debt is total borrowings minus cash and short-term investments; when cash exceeds debt the company has net cash.

Net debt shows the real burden of borrowing. Net cash companies can fund dividends and expansion without lenders and are better placed in high-interest-rate periods.

Formula

Net debt = total debt − cash and short-term investments
